Put your team in the picture

If challenged to choose a picture that described their team or businesses values, how would your team go about it? And what would be the biggest part of the challenge? Choosing the picture or the team being able to agree what business values the picture should show?

The aim of this teamwork session is to produce a team that has well aligned values.

Our workshop leader, a newspaper pictures editor with many years in the business will reveal to you the secrets of storytelling with pictures. This is an art that is discovered anew with every communications revolution from the hidden messages in classic 17th century portraiture, through the memorable and revealing photojournalism of the late 20th century to the digital images that “go viral” across the internet today.

Your team will think that what they are to learn from an expert is how to pick a good image for a corporate publication or web site – apparently a “light” session about how a good image must be well composed or use the right palette of colours – with a touch of history of art thrown in.

But the apparently simple, throw away exercise of selecting a picture that expresses their team values from a pile scattered on the table will force them to articulate just what those values are – and to stand up for or amend those values in the face of challenge from other team members. And in this subtle teamwork exercise to expose potentially conflicting values within a business or team there won’t be the easy option photo of someone crossing the finishing line first for them to glibly pick – oh, no!

We suggest existing teams work together on this exercise, perhaps split to smaller teams of 4 – 6.

SUITABLE FOR…?
- Teams or businesses that need to be led to articulate and challenge their values.
- This is an exercise that would ideally fit after lunch on a team training day. Maximum benefit will be achieved by the trainer closely observing the discussions over the picture choice and following up with a carefully facilitated discussion.

Sessions can be from 30 minutes to a whole day to suit your programme.
