If you are looking for a team building event with a difference, then this is one provided by nature and ably assisted by the awe inspiring birds of prey. It’s a little known fact that each species of raptor has its own hunting strategy – some hunt as individuals, some use teamwork with birds of different size and gender each having a specific role to catch different prey. And when they are hunting with the falconer, dogs and ferrets also take part in the team work to flush out the prey.
These group activities provide your team with a shared moment of natural magic, a glimpse of bonding and trust between falconer and hawk. The team work between birds and animals can be used as an analogy and examplar for improved day to day working relationships.
Further analogies can be drawn. While they may have an opportunistic natural behaviour, habitat and hunting style, each bird of prey has to assess the energy expenditure in each swoop carefully – an incorrect appraisal of its chances can result in a use of valuable calories that may mean it has no reserve left for a more successful opportunity to catch its prey.
While this is an outdoor activity, its one which can go at the pace of the slowest or the group can split with part of the group undertaking a side activity while others catch up. We can include some team work group activities involving the birds that will allow the group to mix outside the normal work hierarchy. These are group activities that will appeal to all – the hunting aspect appealing to the more competitively minded while the working with animals appeals to those with a softer side. And the hawks choose who they take a liking too – a great equaliser as they don’t respect salary levels!
